The stories, in which wild animals play the leading roles and teach tender lessons about the human condition, mark the return of the enigmatic writer. In the titular story, a young fox becomes obsessed with a butterfly, only to learn the dangers of infatuation.

Other themes explored include the benefits of unwavering ambition, the meaning and impact of beautiful objects, the search for serenity and the power of positive thinking. Forty years after her remarkable debut, Luli reminds us once again that we are all animals, connected by a vast and ever-changing ecosystem far larger than ourselves.
