Behind the Fragrance
Laboratorio Olfattivo - Viaggio in Italia - ARANCIA ROSSA - Eau de Cologne
Inspired by his love for Italy, perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena has created a collection of fragrances that capture the joy of Italy. Mandarino, Limone, Bergamotto, Arancia Rossa and Pompelmo are the fragrances of this collection called "Viaggio in Italia", a journey through Italy whose scents are like a breath of sunshine in winter.
"Bergamot is elegant, lemon is energetic, mandarin is cheerful. Orange is sunny and ironic. In the Italian town of Ivrea, not far from Turin, an orange battle is the highlight of the annual carnival celebrations. Oranges became a symbol of military defeat in 1801 when Prince Manuel Godoy y Álvarez de Faria sent a basket of the fruit to his mistress, the Queen, to celebrate Spain's victory over Portugal. Only to take revenge by carrying the name of Portugal in the perfume industry for many years. The oranges praised and sold by merchants accompany the tragic end of Carmen in Bizet's opera of the same name. But my favourite story is a Christmas one. In December, oranges are a gift of light, a message of the end of winter, rebellious fruits that carry the colour of summer". - Jean-Claude Ellena
A fruit so safe and sensual that it is associated in the collective memory with battles and celebrations. As popular and earthy in our memories as it is elegant and refined in olfactory compositions. Jean-Claude Ellena is a world-famous French perfumer known for his minimalist style and his elegant fragrances. Born in 1947 in Grasse, a centre of the perfume industry, Ellena was surrounded by scents from an early age as his father was also a perfumer. Ellena began his career in perfumery as an apprentice in a small company in Grasse, before gaining more extensive experience with companies such as Givaudan and later Sisley. His breakthrough came in the 1970s, when he began working for major fashion and fragrance brands. One of his most famous roles was as house perfumer for Hermès from 2004 to 2016. During his time at Hermès, he created many of the house's iconic fragrances, including Terre d'Hermès, Un Jardin sur le Nil and many others in the Un Jardin series. These fragrances are renowned for their fresh and transparent qualities, which bear Ellena's signature.
