In 1454, two aristocrats, Rinaldo D'Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, fell in love with the beautiful daughter of the lord of the castle, Taddeo Parisio—Lionora. To decide who could win her hand, Lionora's father decreed that the dispute would be settled not with weapons, but with a game of chess. This historic event led to the famous tradition of the “living chess game” (Partita a Scacchi), which takes place every two years in Marostica. On a large square in front of the castle, the chess game is reenacted with live figures, a festival that commemorates the legend and is one of Italy’s most renowned historical performances. The winner of the game was to marry Lionora, while the loser married her sister, bringing peace between the two families.
