Behind the Fragrance
Stora Skuggan - Thumbsucker - Eau de Parfum
A long time ago, an old king named Yuvanaswa lived with great wealth, endless happiness and many wives. But his greatest wish, to have children of his own, was denied him. Therefore, the holy and wise Bhrigu agreed to make a magic potion and fulfil the king's wish. Yuvanaswa was very pious and organised a big festival to pay homage to the gods and receive their support.
The ritual feast lasted several days and at the end, the great King Yusanaswa was tired and very thirsty. He found a large jug with a cool drink, which he drank whole. But this jug contained the magic potion of Bhrigu, which was actually intended for the queen. Now the king himself became pregnant and due to his high standing with the holy powers, the seven sages and even Indra, he gave birth to a son. But he was unable to breastfeed the child. Then Indra, the king of the gods, cut his thumb and his veins filled with life-giving nectar. He let the baby suck on his thumb, nourished it and gave it the name Mandhata, the new king who will conquer the whole world.
In memory of our divine ancestors, children still suck their thumbs today.
Stora Skuggan Thumbsucker Eau de Parfum - Childhood as an olfactory paradox
The Swedish fragrance house Stora Skuggan is known for its bold, conceptual perfumes that not only tell stories but also capture emotions in an almost philosophical way. Their creations are not classic fragrances in the traditional sense - they are wearable works of art that depict memories, dreams and even contradictions in olfactory form.
With Thumbsucker Eau de Parfum, Stora Skuggan embarks on a very special journey: a return to the world of childhood - a time of innocence, security, but also insecurity and the first conflicts with the world. Thumb-sucking is one of the earliest and most instinctive calming rituals we know as humans. It is a gesture of comfort, but also a habit that becomes frowned upon over time, an innocent pleasure that must be given up at some point.
What does this ambivalent feeling smell like? Thumbsucker is not a nostalgic candy scent - it is an abstract, profound and multi-layered interpretation of childhood, captured between sweet security, medicinal rigour and the gentle warmth of the skin.
The fragrance - between candyfloss and tincture, between dream and reality
Thumbsucker Eau de Parfum plays with contrasts. It is not a simple gourmand fragrance, but a sophisticated, almost surreal creation that treads the fine line between familiarity and strangeness.
The top note is a hint of purity, but with an unexpected twist. Bergamot and pink pepper open the fragrance with a fresh, slightly tangy clarity - like the first breath after a deep sleep. But then a surprising sweetness enters: milky notes and a hint of almond are reminiscent of baby powder and warm skin, but also of the slightly medicinal bitterness of toothpaste or finger paints.
The actual core of the fragrance unfolds in the heart: vanilla, iris and a subtle liquorice note create a sensual, almost hypnotic depth. Iris root lends a powdery elegance reminiscent of the velvety scent of skin, while vanilla adds a creamy, soothing sweetness. But rather than moving in a classic cuddly scent direction, Thumbsucker throws an unexpected element into the mix: a gently bitter herbal note reminiscent of old apothecary ointments - perhaps a nod to the bitter tinctures that used to be applied to thumbs to discourage children from sucking them.
The base note is warm, close to the skin and almost hypnotic. Musk and ambergris provide a soft, slightly hazy depth, while a subtle leather note reinforces the contrast: is it the cosiness of an old, worn blanket or the memory of the moment when innocence meets adulthood?
A fragrance like a hazy childhood memory
Thumbsucker Eau de Parfum is a poetic reflection on growing up - on those moments that still taste of candy floss but already have a hint of reality in them. It is a fragrance for those who move between worlds, who do not want to let go of the past but also know that they cannot dwell in it.
It is a composition that not only smells, but evokes a feeling - the echo of an invisible comfort, a memory of a time that will never fully return. Thumbsucker is not just a fragrance - it is a perfume for the nostalgic, for the dreamers, for those who remember the gentle melancholy of transition.
With this creation, Stora Skuggan shows once again that perfume can be more than just a pleasant composition - it can be an intimate, profound and multi-layered reflection of the human experience.
