Behind the Fragrance
Pana Dora Sweden - GRAND MUSK - Extrait de Parfum
Pheromones could enhance the effects of scents, with musk standing out as one of these unique fragrances. Musk – A Sensory Caress Originally derived from the glandular secretions of male musk deer, musk is now predominantly synthesized to support species conservation. Its structural similarity to pheromones has earned it a reputation for its aphrodisiac properties, making it a popular choice in perfumes for its warm and sensual scents. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Pana Dora's Grand Musk is an earthy, organic, woody, and animalic scent.
Contributing to the woody base note is guaiac wood, which holds symbolic significance in certain cultures, often associated with strength, durability and healing. Guaiac wood, originating from the tropical regions of the Americas, boasts a rich cultural history and diverse uses. Guaiac wood carries a characteristic and distinctive scent, described as earthy, spicy and slightly resinous. The fragrance can vary depending on whether the wood is freshly cut or processed. Fresh guaiac wood exudes a stronger, fresh and resinous aroma, while processed wood tends to have a more subtle, yet still spicy and slightly sweet scent. Overall, the scent of guaiac wood is often perceived as pleasant and calming. Several other fragrance raw materials sourced from components of the animal world include:
Ambergris: Extracted from the sperm whale's digestive tract, ambergris is recognized for its deep, warm and slightly animalic scent, commonly used in perfumes as a base note. Civet: Obtained from the glandular secretions of the civet cat, civet has a strong, animalic scent, traditionally used in perfumes as a fixative to enhance and stabilize scent notes. Castoreum: Derived from the glandular secretions of beavers, castoreum features a heavy, balsamic scent, employed as a base note in certain perfumes.
It is crucial to acknowledge that many of these animal-derived fragrances are being replaced with synthetic alternatives to promote animal welfare and conserve natural resources.
The quality of synthetically produced fragrance raw materials has significantly improved in recent years.
