Behind the Fragrance
Pana Dora Sweden - OUD REPUBLIK - Extrait de Parfum
On a frosty winter evening in Sweden, perfumer Ibrahim Al Zouabi found himself seated by the fireplace, engrossed in an ancient tome. Inspired by the desire to craft a warm fragrance that could alleviate stress, soothe the heartbeat, restore inner peace, and elicit happiness hormones, he set out to create a distinct scent. Simultaneously enchanted by the aromas associated with ancient mythology's princes, kings, and nobles, he birthed Oud Republic by Pana Dora—a fragrance that defies the conventions of existing oud perfumes.
Oud, also known as agarwood, stands as one of the world's most prized and expensive fragrances. Several factors contribute to its preciousness: Rarity and Limited Availability: Oud originates from specific species of the eagle tree (Aquilaria) native to Southeast Asia. The formation of oud occurs when the eagle tree produces resin as a defense mechanism against infection by certain fungi or external agents. Given that not all eagle trees experience this infection, oud production is exceptionally rare and unpredictable. Time-Consuming Process: Obtaining oud is a meticulous and time-intensive process. Eagle trees require many years to develop the infection leading to oud formation.
Even then, it often takes years for enough resin to be produced for harvesting. The extraction of oud from the resin demands specialized knowledge and techniques executed by experienced craftsmen. Unique and Complex Scent: Oud boasts a distinctive and intricate fragrance characterized as woody, earthy, spicy, and occasionally slightly animalic. It has been highly prized for centuries in perfume making and traditional medicinal practices, particularly in countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, other Middle Eastern regions, and parts of Asia.
Cultural Significance: Oud holds cultural significance and is in high demand, especially among perfume enthusiasts and luxury fragrance collectors. The combination of limited availability and high demand contributes to elevated prices for oud. In summary, the rarity, intricate production process, unique scent profile, and cultural significance collectively contribute to the preciousness of Oud.
