Behind the Fragrance
Isabey - FLEUR NOCTURNE - Eau de Parfum
FLEUR NOCTURNE, formerly known as "Bleu de Chine", is an eau de parfum created in 1925 by Julien Viard for the House of Isabey. It is described as a small jewel in a crystal. Only a few original flacons are still available as collector's items, one of which is in the Perfume Museum in Grasse, France. The bottle was designed by Ludwig Moser in collaboration with a crystal master craftsman from Karlsbad and was a dark, diamond-shaped amethyst with hand-drawn patterns. Here is a little information about the traditional Moser company.
The Ludwig Moser company in Karlovy Vary was founded in 1857 and Moser quickly received the privilege of becoming purveyor to the court of Emperor Franz Joseph I and his court. A large number of prizes and awards followed and thanks to the success of the royal collection, Moser became purveyor to the court of Edward VII, King of England. 1923: Leo Moser personally presents an extensive collection to Pope Pius XI, engraved with the papal coat of arms. From this moment on, it will be known as the "Pope". 1957: Moser celebrates 100 years of glass art and founds the Giant Shot Glass Club. Members are the Spanish King Juan Carlos I, the Japanese Princess Sayako and Louis Armstrong. 1997: During his visit to the Czech Republic, Pope John Paul II receives as an official gift a crystal cross created by Moser at the personal request of President Václav Havel and designed by artist Karel Bečvář. 2000: Tono Stano designs the new statue for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, a figure holding a flawless crystal ball that belongs to Robert Redford, John Malkovich, Judi Dench, Morgan Freeman and Jude Law, among others. 2004: The Moser Drinking Collection shines at the Royal Wedding in Spain, while the Magnificent Collection is chosen to add sparkle to the Royal Wedding in Copenhagen. 2007: A bowl, a vase and a goblet from the Magnificent Collection, engraved with the royal coat of arms, adorn the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
But now we come back to the scent of Isabey: FLEUR NOCTURNE. In 1925, Julien Viard designed a small crystal jewel called "Bleu de Chine" for the Isabey perfume house. Only a few examples of what were considered collector's items are still available; one of them is in the "Museum of Perfume" in Grasse, France. In the same year, Ludwig Moser designed another bottle, together with a crystal master from Karlsbad: a dark amethyst with hand-painted patterns in a diamond-shaped bottle. When the decision was made to produce a contemporary version, it was not possible to use the original name as it had been registered by another company in the meantime. Nevertheless, the spirit of "Bleu de Chine" was captured by creating an exceptional fragrance in a bottle treated with a unique process called "sublimation". The dark blue color and unique decor have been retained in the new edition.
FLEUR NOCTURNE, formerly known as "Bleu de Chine", is a fragrance inspired by a world of crystal, flowers and amethyst. The art of refined fragrance notes was entrusted to the virtuoso Jean Jacques, who has already proven his talent with the fragrance "Gardénia" for Isabey. He has composed an extraordinarily lush floral bouquet with white fruity blossoms on sensual base notes. The top note, consisting of mandarin mixed with apricot blossom and white peach, immediately conveys the certain feeling of holding a perfume made of exceptional, noble and precious ingredients in your hands. The fragrance then unfolds its heart, characterized by jasmine, magnolia and gardenia, of a quality that is very rare. The base leaves a strong and elegant trail, accompanied by sunny notes of vanilla and a hint of patchouli.
The Isabey perfume house was founded in 1924 by Henry James de Rothschild. The house was named after the portraitist and miniature painter Jean-Baptiste ISABEY. Creating miniature portraits during the turbulent years of the French Revolution was both a challenging and extremely productive time for artists. Jean-Baptiste Isabey, who was already considered the most successful miniature painter in Paris at the age of 22 during the storming of the Bastille, aptly describes the situation of miniature painters during this time in his memoirs:
A new opportunity for our work arose from the turmoil of the times themselves. I offered my services to all sufferers and therefore called my new works Portraits de consolation - portraits of consolation."
The Isabey perfume house is known for its high-quality creations and refined, elegant packaging. In 1925, the jury of the "Exposition des Arts Decoratifs" awarded it the gold medal for the originality of its luxurious coffret "Le Collier d'Isabey", consisting of six pearl flacons. The splendor of the flacons, designed by "Julien Viard" or René Lalique, and the jewelry box-like packaging gave the perfumes a "must have" status.
