Inspired by his love for Italy, master perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena has created a collection of Parfum Cologne fragrances that are portraits of Italian happiness. Mandarino, Limone, Bergamotto, Arancia Rossa and Pompelmo are the fragrances in the "Viaggio in Italia" collection, a journey to Italy, fragrances that are like sunshine in winter. Jean-Claude Ellena describes himself as a "happy pessimist". Sometimes he is overcome by "spleen", as Baudelaire put it - a term for depression, boredom, melancholy and restlessness. But a short trip across the border to Italy, just half an hour from his home, always lifts his spirits.

Italy, he says, smells of happiness, a conviction reinforced by the country's long-standing popularity with northern Europeans on holiday. Ellena enthuses about the Italian joie de vivre: loud conversations, the sale of coffee, cheese, pasta and, above all, citrus fruits. Everything in Italy is exuberant: The wheels of cheese are as big as millstones, pasta comes in every imaginable colour and shape, and lemons and oranges are as big as balls. Bergamot, which comes mainly from Kalabria and not from China, has long been used to refine second-rate teas to make them seem more premium. An Italian, Giovanni Maria Farina, used it in his eau de cologne to spread joie de vivre in the courtyards of Europe and, later, in its cities and countryside.

Ellena, whose grandmother was from Piemont, believes that people always return to the love of their childhood. Having travelled through many regions of Italy, he is convinced that in Italy there are more personal opinions than public ones. Perfumeries and fragrances are very personal; there are no dominant imperial brands, but small, elegant shops where customers are treated like royalty. Inspired by this atmosphere and his desire to bring joy, Ellena wanted to create an Eau de Cologne that celebrated Italy and its vibrant, sunny citrus fruits.

Jean-Claude Ellena is a world-renowned French perfumer known for his minimalist style and elegant fragrances. Born in 1947 in Grasse, a centre of the perfume industry, Ellena was surrounded by scents from an early age as his father was also a perfumer. One of his most famous roles was that of house perfumer for Hermès from 2004 to 2016. During his time at Hermès, he created many of the house's iconic fragrances, including Terre d'Hermès, Un Jardin sur le Nil and many others in the Un Jardin series. These fragrances are known for their fresh and transparent quality, with Ellena's signature.
