Perfumer: Mark Buxton

Mark Buxton is a renowned perfumer with over 25 years of experience in creating high-quality fragrances. Born in England, he grew up near Hamburg and moved to Paris more than 20 years ago, where he fell in love with the city. His interests are wide-ranging and include hedonism, wine, cooking and a passion for Art Deco antiques. 

Early in his career, Buxton had a major impact on the perfume industry with the creation of the first fragrance for Comme des Garçons. This breakthrough brought him recognition in the world of haute perfumery. Since then, he has worked with many renowned brands. These include Givenchy, Versace, Van Cleef & Arpels, Paco Rabanne, Burberry and Cartier. His unmistakable signature is characterised by bold and innovative compositions that often push the boundaries of traditional perfumery.

In addition to his work for major brands, Buxton has also made an important contribution to niche perfumery. He has collaborated with several niche brands such as Le Labo, House of Sillage and Renegades. One notable project was the creation of the fragrance ‘L'air de Panache’ for Wes Anderson's film ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’.

Mark Buxton also co-founded the Nose Shop in Paris, which is dedicated to niche perfumery. There, he helps customers to find individual fragrances with the help of an innovative search engine (The Fandomentals). His career is characterised by a mixture of artistic creativity and meticulous craftsmanship, making him an important figure in the perfume world.

Mark Buxton has a remarkable connection to the famous German television programme ‘Wetten, dass...?’, which took place in the 1980s. Back then, Buxton appeared on the show with a friend and bet that they could recognise 600 different perfumes by scent alone. This unusual bet impressed the audience and brought Buxton a lot of attention.

Taking part in the programme was not only an exciting experience, but also marked a turning point in his life. His ability to identify fragrances so precisely aroused the interest of the perfumery industry. As a result, he was given the opportunity to complete an internship at Haarmann & Reimer (now part of Symrise). This laid the foundation for his career as a perfumer.

Mark Buxton went on to become one of the most sought-after fragrance experts in the world. His passion for fragrances, which characterised him from a young age, became publicly visible through his participation in ‘Wetten, dass...?’ and paved the way for his successful career.
