Behind the Fragrance
Nectar Olfactif - MELIPONA - Eau de Parfum
MELIPONA pays homage to the origins of vanilla, a treasure that originally came from Mexico and was prized by the Aztecs to soften the astringency and bitterness of their chocolate. In Europe, the cultivation of vanilla outside of its original origins met with numerous challenges. Even Louis XIV, who was enchanted by its beguiling aroma, failed despite his desire to cultivate vanilla on the island of Bourbon, now Réunion. The secret of vanilla pollination, which remained unknown for a long time, lies in the Mexican Melipona bee, which plays a crucial role in this process. It is only through the pollination of this bee that the blossom of the vanilla orchid is transformed into the coveted green and long fruit that we know as the vanilla pod.
The MELIPONA fragrance pays homage to this fascinating story and combines the depth and warmth of vanilla. It unfolds in an elegant composition of woody notes and the sweetness of vanilla, finally fading into oriental and amber-coloured accents. MELIPONA by NECTAR OLFACTIF is not just a fragrance, but an olfactory journey that seduces the senses and reflects complexity. The perfumer of MELIPONA Serge de Oliveira is a French perfumer who works for Robertet in Grasse, a leading natural fragrance company. He began his career in 2002 at IFF as an assistant perfumer, where he discovered his love for raw materials such as vetiver and patchouli. He later moved to Robertet, where he further developed his skills and specialised in natural ingredients.
The design of NECTAR OLFACTIF is a tribute to natural elegance and the fascinating world of bees and plants. The bottle has a cubic shape with a honey-coloured finish on the inside that draws a direct connection to the essence of bees. The design of the cap takes on the shape of a honeycomb, which emphasises the deep inspiration of the bee colony. A special highlight is the medal applied to the bottle. This is finished in gold tones using a special screen printing process and shows the image of a bee surrounded by a flower at the top and leaves on the sides.
This ornate depiction is inspired by the discovery of a bee encased in amber, which was found in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and is believed to be the oldest known bee fossil. Assuming perfect preservation, this fossil would be 100 million years old. To set the scene for the perfume, the packaging is a deep green, symbolising the connection to the plant world. The case itself is surrounded by a protective envelope and looks like an elegant, understated box. Inside, it is lined with a soft suede replica, which adds an extra sensual dimension and reveals the perfume bottle like a hidden treasure when opened.
