Frank Voelkl is the perfumer of 16A Orchard Street

The German, who lives in New York, is a one hundred per cent cosmopolitan - having grown up in Holland and France, he originally wanted to go into the diplomatic service.

It was his grandfather's farm in Germany that made him discover the scents of nature. As a teenager, he then spent his time in Paris sniffing his way through a perfumery in the Rue de Rivoli with great pleasure. However, it was Tahiti, the birthplace of his wife, that inspired him to create his first fragrance in 1997. It was Tiara by Chantecaille.

Frank Voelkl, who has been working for Firmenich since 2005, thinks of fragrances in terms of colours, melodies and musical movements. In his fragrance compositions, he strives for "perfect imperfection".

For him, it is imperfection that creates beauty and emotion.
