Marfa, Texas, is a not-so-hidden gem, far from the hustle and bustle. Ever since Donald Judd brought his art (and subsequently artists) to this meeting place in the high desert, people from all over the world have flocked to experience the magic of this place. There is something mysterious in the air. UFO-like lights adorn the horizon. (I saw them with my own eyes!) The fusion of different cultures leads to an extremely free-spirited ethic. Liz Lambert founded El Cosmico, her exclusive campsite, which she describes as an oasis for "nomads". Musicians, artists and seekers of all kinds set off to capture the spirit of this arid stretch of land.

There is a vibrant freshness in Marfa that contrasts with something old, timeless and spiritual. For this fragrance, I studied the plants that surround the city in the Chihuahua Desert. Many of these desert plants produce strong aromatic oils, presumably to ward off predators, protect from the harsh wind and sun or retain moisture. For the perfume that would take you there, I combined desert pepper and sumac with the dominant landscape scent of creosote (which smells like oily desert rain) over a sandy accord with dry mesquitewood.

The scent is as different as the area itself. I don't think it smells like anything else. It's like white smoke, the magic of aldehydes and strange alien plants in the desert. One of the fragrance notes in EL COSMICO by D.S. & DURGA is the essence of gale bush. In perfumes, this is prized for its rich, balsamic fragrance, which includes notes of myrrh and blackcurrant.

Gagel essential oil is occasionally used in fragrance compositions, especially those that require a woody, earthy note.
