DS & Durga
D.S. & DURGA, fragrances that are on a par with great music, painting and literature. The power of scent is equal to that of sight and sound.
Launched in 2007 by New York couple Kavi Ahuja Moltz and David Seth Moltz, D.S. & Durga is one of the few fragrance brands whose perfumer and designer are at the helm, creating unique scents.
The name is made up of David's abbreviations and Durga, the nickname David gave Kavi. Durga in turn refers to Kavi's Indian roots and is the name of a Hindu goddess.
David Seth Moltz, who grew up in Massachusetts and is a musician by trade, became interested in plants, botany and flavors at an early age. On weekend trips together, David and Kavi would rummage through dusty old bookstores for books on flavors, fragrances and plants. These books were the foundation for David's knowledge and for later creating his own fragrances. It all started with plant extracts, which were made into soaps and colognes and used as gifts for friends. But soon the first perfumes were created, in which the scent of the ocean in the afternoon, smoky wood in winter, lemon soap at the kitchen sink and many impressions from films and books merged together.
Kavi Ahuja Moltz is the brains behind the label's design. Born in New Jersey, she grew up largely in India and studied architecture in Los Angeles. Her olfactory memory is shaped by fragrances from her parents' native India. From magnificent flowers that were worn in her hair or as a necklace around her neck on all occasions and kept under her pillow at night.
They are among Brooklyn's DIY pioneers. Things they love have been transformed into fragrant stories of cowboys, the open prairie of the Midwest and characters from Russian novels and folk songs. Cowboy Grass, Rose Atlantic and Bowmakers are a few fragrant examples from a whole range of eau de parfums.
The fragrances were first presented at Barneys New York in 2015, followed by Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. D.S.& Durga is now also presented in its own stores in Nolita, Williamsburg and Venice Beach.
