D.S. & DURGA Radio Bombay / Transistor radio hewn of sandalwood radiates ragas in the Bandra heat A transistor radio carved from sandalwood emits ragas under the scorching Bandra sun. Hot copper tubes warm the soft wood, releasing blooms of musk, cream, peach, ambrette, coconut, and cedar distillates. I am intrigued by the concept of hypothetical scents. Not everything exudes a strong or immediately perceptible aroma, but certain objects suggest a particular fragrance. Light bulbs emit light as electrical current flows through their metal filaments.

They warm up, melting the dust on their surfaces and emitting wisps of heat. Even the tubes in amplifiers have their own distinctive scent. When my '69 Fender Deluxe heats up (after a wild guitar session), the back of the amp emanates a warm, dusty metallic fragrance - reminiscent of the backstage ambiance in a humid venue. Imagine a tube amplifier housed within an old radio crafted from sandalwood.

The interaction of heat and wood would open the pores of the sandalwood, releasing its elegant fragrance - a blend of musky cedarwood, sweet peach, exotic coconut, creamy lactones, and gentle milk. Genuine sandalwood essence is unparalleled in purity. I often wear it neat on my skin. Its scent evokes images of India, effigies, and profound spiritual experiences.

Unfortunately, genuine sandalwood has become rare due to overharvesting, and perfumers seldom use the precious oil from Mysore. Radio Bombay is a creative reinterpretation of Mysore sandalwood, inspired by these reflections and impressions. I envision the radio nestled in a small, warm shop in Bandra - the vibrant heart of Bombay. Amidst the bustling city, the radio emits a captivating fragrance, accompanied by the sounds of traditional Indian ragas and the melodies of the legendary Geeta Dutt.
