Behind the Fragrance
Filippo Sorcinelli - MEMENTO - BASILICA DI ASSISI - Extrait de Parfum
A spring breeze blows in over the large lawn, mingling with the wood and the medieval walls frescoed by Giotto and Cimabue. This image evokes an atmosphere rich in history and beauty, a place where time seems to stand still and the air is filled with the scents and aura of past centuries. Such a wind brings to life not only the freshness of spring, but also the stories and secrets preserved within the walls of the basilica and its sacred artefacts. It is as if the wind itself becomes a messenger between worlds, building a bridge between the sacred and the profane, between the sublimity of faith and the earthly beauty of art.
‘Basilica Di Assisi’ by Filippo Sorcinelli is a fragrance work of art that draws its inspiration from the sacristy drawers of the Basilica of San Francesco. It captures the essence of a spring breeze that sweeps across the expansive meadows, carrying with it the aromas of wood and the medieval walls frescoed by the master hands of Giotto and Cimabue. The fragrance composition unfolds in a harmonious symphony in which the notes of tonka bean, benzoin, styrax, amber, rosa alba, fruits, patchouli, labdanum, lemon, bergamot, petitgrain and incense merge into a soft melange.
Rosa Alba, also known as the White Rose of York, is a historic rose species that is prized for its pure white to pale pink flowers. Characterised by a strong, sweet fragrance, it belongs to the Rosaceae family and is popular in many gardens and parks for its beauty and fragrance. It has a long history and in the Middle Ages it symbolised purity and innocence. Benzoin and styrax are two natural resins that are valued in perfumery for their unique scents. Although both are extracted from the resin of trees, they come from different plant species and each have their own characteristic properties and uses.
Benzoin has a warm, vanilla-like scent and is often used in perfumes to intensify and extend the longevity of other fragrances. Styrax, also known as storax or liquidambar, is extracted from the resin of the oriental amber tree (Liquidambar orientalis) or other Liquidambar species. This resin has a sweet, balsamic scent and is used in perfumery and aromatherapy in a similar way to benzoin. Benzoin tends to have a richer, vanilla-like aroma, while styrax has a sweeter and more balsamic scent.
