Behind the Fragrance
Filippo Sorcinelli - MEMENTO - DÒMM - Extrait de Parfum
Dòmm Extrait de Parfum by Filippo Sorcinelli, draws its inspiration from the deep and historically rich impressions of the sacristy of Milan Cathedral. The name ‘aquilonare’ derives from the late Latin ‘aquilonaris’, meaning ‘north’, and refers to the ancient sacristy of Milan Cathedral - the first building core of the cathedral, whose foundation stone was laid in 1386 in the heart of an urban centre overflowing with buildings.
This place was the first to be built after the laying of the cathedral's foundation stone and still contains precious marble elements, sculptures, frescoes, furniture and cabinets with all kinds of drawers, which are still used by the priests to prepare for the sacred rites. The use of incense and styrax in Milan Cathedral, as in many other sacred spaces around the world, is deeply rooted in the tradition of holy masses and religious ceremonies. These aromatic resins have played a central role in the liturgy for centuries, contributing to an atmosphere of devotion and prayer. Frankincense, the resin of the Boswellia tree, has been recognised since ancient times for its ability to create a connection between the earthly and the divine. When burnt, frankincense releases a rich, balsamic fragrance that serves to purify the environment, calm the senses and prepare the faithful for the spiritual experience of the Mass.
In Catholic tradition, the rising smoke of incense symbolises the ascension of prayers to heaven. Styrax, a resin extracted from the bark of various storax trees, is also known for its sweet, vanilla-like scent. It is often used together with frankincense and other resins in church incense. Styrax helps to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that emphasises the spiritual dimension of church services. In Milan Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a landmark of the city of Milan, the use of these resins is particularly effective. The enormous dimensions of the cathedral, its impressive arches and the rays of light shining through the stained glass windows create an impressive backdrop for the liturgy. Incense and styrax add an olfactory dimension to this visual splendour, deepening the spiritual experience and helping the faithful to concentrate fully on the sacred.
The use of incense and styrax in the holy masses of Milan Cathedral is thus an essential part of liturgical practice, which not only fills the air with its sacred fragrance, but also touches the hearts of those present and draws them closer to the divine. This tradition connects the ephemeral with the eternal and turns every mass into a profound, sensual experience that touches the soul.
Dòmm Extrait de Parfum captures the essence of this sacred and historic place, a fragrance that reflects both the reverence and the deep spirituality associated with Milan Cathedral and its sacristy. The fragrance, Dòmm Extrait de Parfum, is inspired by the precious materials of the sacristy. Filippo Sorcinelli's creation was also influenced by the priests' vestments and the rituals involved in preparing for holy mass.
Dòmm is therefore more than a perfume; it is an olfactory journey into the heart of one of Italy's most important religious buildings, a tribute to its history, its art and the spiritual significance that Milan Cathedral has had and continues to have for believers and visitors over the centuries.
It is a fragrance for those who are inspired by the majesty and tranquillity of sacred places and want to carry a piece of this grandeur into their daily lives.
