A Proust madeleine is a literary and cultural concept that comes from Marcel Proust's famous work ‘In Search of Lost Time’ (À la recherche du temps perdu). It describes how a seemingly everyday stimulus - often a taste or smell - triggers an intense, unconscious memory and suddenly brings it back into consciousness. The Proust Madeleine symbolises the ability of sensory impressions (especially taste and smell) to awaken memories that are deeply rooted in our memory. This phenomenon is now known as involuntary memory, where memories emerge without conscious effort. In everyday life, we speak of a ‘Proust madeleine’ when a certain smell, taste or other sensory experience suddenly reminds someone of a past experience.

The BLACK SESAME fragrance by Sensatio Paris was developed by Serge De Oliveira. He is a French perfumer known for his expertise in creating natural fragrances. He began his career in 2002 as an assistant at International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), where he developed a passion for raw materials, particularly woody notes such as vetiver and patchouli.  He later moved to Robertet in Grasse, one of the leading companies in the field of natural fragrances, where he was appointed perfumer in 2013. There he worked in the production of fine fragrances as well as in the development of functional fragrances. He has been working at Robertet's Paris branch since 2019. 

De Oliveira has created numerous fragrances for various brands, including 100Bon, Ormaie, Nolença and Ultra Doux. His work is characterised by the fact that he uses natural ingredients and works with labels such as Cosmos Organic, which set strict criteria for natural perfumes.
