Our journey of discovery back to the roots, to sunny Italy, which was once characterised by Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs and Normans, begins with the bergamot. This royal citrus fruit, a harmonious blend of the vibrancy of lemon and the bitterness of orange, is the undisputed queen of fragrances - an essential ingredient in many recipes for success.

However, this queen has never really been honoured due to its inconsistency. This is why we have decided to use old extraction methods. The bergamot sponge method, also known as the ‘sponge method’, is a traditional technique for extracting essential oils from the peel of the bergamot fruit.

This process originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria, where bergamot is predominantly grown, and begins with the careful harvesting of the ripe bergamot fruit. The outer peel is carefully removed, leaving the flesh untouched. The peel is then pressed onto a natural sponge, which absorbs the valuable essential oils. The sponge is saturated with the oils using circular movements. Once the essential oils have been absorbed, the sponge is squeezed to extract the oils. The result is high-quality bergamot fragrances that are used in perfumes and other products.

The bergamot sponge process epitomises tradition and craftsmanship and aims to extract the purest and highest quality bergamot essence while harking back to the ancient origins of the fruit.
